After weeks of catchy posters, intense lunch table campaigning, smiles and platforms, the results of the Class of 2007 student government elections were announced yesterday.
Freshmen voted P.G. Sittenfeld, Matthew Feinstein, Jessie Cronan, Jean Yin and Christine Kan in as their president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and social chair, respectively. The deciding runoff election took place Friday. Three of the five winners are from Forbes Inn.
"The runoff election is different from the first round election in that the voting period is only 24 hours whereas the voting period in the regular election is 48 hours," said Jacqui Perlman '05, who runs the elections as USG vice president. "There is also a short turnaround period from when the candidates are notified of their status and when voting ends."
While voter turnout was at an all time high of 70 percent for the first-round election, an average number of students voted, about 55 percent in the runoff, Perlman said.
"The hardest part about the election was getting everyone to vote again after they had already voted in the first round," Kan said.
Sittenfeld won the office of president with 333 votes over candidate Jeremy Johnson's 287.
"I feel great, and I am really grateful to all my friends and the class as a whole for being so incredibly supportive and helpful," Sittenfeld said. "It was stiff competition and a really classy field of candidates. I feel lucky to have been chosen because any one of the [candidates] would have done a great job."
In the race for vice president, Feinstein won with 332 votes over Chris Willis' 269.
"I am happy that I stuck with my own style and what I'm comfortable with my personality [during campaigning]. The people who voted for me voted for the real me because I presented something indicative of myself and my personality," Feinstein said.
Interestingly, a majority of the freshman officers — Sittenfeld, Yin and Kan — live in Forbes College, Yin said.
"Since we are so far away from everything, we are a close community in Forbes. We worked really hard to get all of Forbes voting, but we were also really active in the rest of the campus. We are definitely thinking on a whole class wide basis and working for the Princeton community as a whole."
The new officers will assume their positions immediately and serve for the remainder of the academic year.
