Beginning at midnight last night, the FireHazards a cappella group performed "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at Theatre Intime. This is the fourth consecutive year the group has performed the show on the night of Princeton's Halloween festivities.
"We play the movie in the background and have the actors on stage doing the scenes at the same time," said Paris Makell '04, who played Magenta in last year's performance.
The 1975 film, starring Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon, has become a cult favorite across the nation. The plot centers on a couple who inadvertently find themselves at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite who is holding the annual convention of visitors from the planet Transsexual.
The FireHazards were "founded with the goal of bringing a sense of community and love to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities," according to their website.
The event has been very successful in past years, drawing many students in addition to some fans from off-campus, said Fairy Pardiwalla '05, president of the FireHazards. "We always have to turn people away," Makell said.
Pardiwalla, who played the lead role of Janet for the past two years and played a small role last night, said the audience response has been "amazing" in past years, adding that some audience members even wore costumes to the performances.
The show depends in part upon audience participation, as there are a number of "audience lines" which are traditionally said at various moments in the film.
"You'd think that Princeton students wouldn't know the lines to the show, but a lot of people did," Pardiwalla said.
"The FireHazards have given it quite a few lines of our own," she added.
The show was sponsored by the Alcohol Initiative, Makell said, adding that "it's another great opportunity for people to do something that doesn't involve alcohol."
