Students and community members will soon be able to enjoy their Panera Bread bagels, soups and salads in the sun outside the restaraunt. The Princeton Borough Zoning Board of Adjustment decided Friday to allow the eatery to place five outdoor tables on the Nassau Street sidewalk in front of the Panera building.
The board's decision will make Panera the first restaurant in Princeton's central business district to provide sidewalk tables for patrons. Board members voted 6-1 to allow the eatery's expansion, the Princeton Packet reported.
Managers hope the addition of the tables will improve business for Panera, already a community favorite since its opening in March 2001.
"It'll create more visibility," Bill Boriello, Panera's district manager, said. "It'll attract more attention to the front of the building."
The tables will also allow current customers more choice as to where to eat.
"A lot of people like to sit outside when it's nice," Boriello said. "It really creates a pleasant atmosphere."
The zoning board permitted Panera five black metal tables, said assistant general manager Susan Winters. The tables will sit in one row in front of the restaurant and will be fenced in, she said.
The Panera shop at the Nassau Park Shopping Center on Rt. 1 already has a similar setup of outdoor furniture, Boriello said, and has gotten good response from customers.
Cindy Hah '03 said she looks forward to the new tables.
"I'm doing my thesis right now, so I always eat around here," she said. "With the nice weather, it would be nice to work outside."
