Geller retires after 35-year career as chief counselor

A University fixture since 1968, Marvin Geller, director of the counseling center in University Health Services, has decided to retire at the end of the year.

"I've been here 35 years," Geller said. "It's time to pursue other things and other interests."

But he has cherished his time here, Geller said.

"I've loved Princeton," he said. "I have no regrets. This has been a wonderful experience . . . Princeton has provided me with multiple opportunities to develop in many ways."

Geller, a psychologist and psychoanalyst, said he is looking forward to practicing privately and continuing his work at the William Alanson White Institute, where he teaches in a program for people interested in learning about organizations and organizational dynamics.

Outside of work, Geller said he looks forward to having more time to travel, bike and write.

His presence here will be missed, said Daniel Silverman, chief medical officer and director of health services, in a University statement.

"Marvin has provided dedicated service to the University and its health services for the greater part of his adult life and set an example of devotion to clinical care of the highest quality that is nothing short of remarkable," Silverman said.

During his time here, Geller has watched the counseling center grow enormously.

It has gone from from treating 300 students to more than 1,000 a year.

"It has been a privilege to be here for so long and to see what kind of changes have occurred since 1968," Geller said. "The only shocking thing is that I can't believe it's gone by so quickly."
