Figure Skating Club on 'Fire and Ice' this weekend at Baker Rink

Unlike most reading this, I have to admit that I didn't come to Princeton for the 7:1 student to faculty ratio. In fact, I didn't come to this school for the all-star professors or the jaw-dropping alumni giving rate either. No, I, like any sensible figure skater, came to Princeton because it had a gothic ice rink.

Ok, so maybe that doesn't make me sensible, but it's not really true anyway. Not completely true at least. I actually came to Princeton for all of the above reasons, including the gothic ice rink.

As someone who's been skating since the age of seven, and as a person who's absolutely in love with the sport, skating was something I knew I wanted to be involved with in college. And, as Princeton was one of the first Ivy League schools to form a collegiate figure skating club, I, of course, chose to come here! Now that I think about it, I probably joined the skating club before classes even started . . .

PUFSC, short for the Princeton University Figure Skating Club, is currently in its ninth year as a club sport and has come a long way since the days of its original two founding members.

After battling varsity hockey, club hockey, IM hockey, and broomball for ice time, the club has finally established itself.

We have grown to a membership of over 30 skaters, ranging from beginners who just began to skate in college, to senior-level skaters who have practically grown up on the ice.

The club competes along the East coast in two to four competitions each year. This year the club represented Princeton at the University of Delaware and Boston University, medaling at both competitions.

And as well as individual skating, we also have a synchronized skating team. The "synch" team has competed at Nationals for the past three years, traveling as far as Colorado Springs. Many of my closest friends on campus are the skaters that I've bonded with on these trips.

In addition to competing, PUFSC puts on two shows every year. This past January, we had a small, impromptu winter exhibition. Our spring show, however, is a full length performance, complete with announcers and spotlights.

This year's theme is "Fire & Ice" and accordingly, music selections include "Cold as Ice," "Great Balls of Fire," and "Fire and Rain." Tickets are $5 for students, $7 for general admission, and $3 for children and can be bought in advance at the Frist Box Office or on the night of the show at the door.

And of course, the show will be held in Baker, Princeton's very own gothic rink.
