Blog — it sounds like one of those words that has a deep meaning, like the question "Do you grok?" from Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land."
What is a blog? A blog, which stands for web log, is a diary kept online, whether for personal or professional reasons.
Tom Zychinski '05 has been keeping his blog since the beginning of the 2002-03 school year.
"It's less a diary and more what I'm doing. Some people are more long-winded and detailed. Mine was like that in the beginning, but that was because I had nothing else to do," Zychinski said.
For Satyen Kale GS, blogs are a way of keeping in touch with people around the world. His blog was started while he was in India over the summer.
"Ninety percent are regular readers —my friends who have blogs of their own. Sometimes I get random people who find my blog somehow and happen to find it interesting and leave a comment," Kale said.
Blogs can be used in many ways. Instead of a diary, Catherine Shu '04 uses her blog to air random thoughts.
"I've always kept a journal and [a blog] is just taking it a step beyond. Sometimes when I'm thinking about stuff, I like to put it out there for other people to look, to stimulate some conversations," she said.
Molecular biology professor Samuel Wang's laboratory also keeps a blog of their activities, listing articles of interest and reminders of meetings.
Computer science professor Edward Felten keeps a web log — FreedomToTinker.com — as well. Felten posts his thoughts on issues related to digital security and copyright law.
He also posts information on national legislation and judicial decisions on these issues so that others may learn about them.
It seems everybody has a blog. Even the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is keeping one.
