Outdoor Action to revamp structure, plan more trips

The Outdoor Action program has expanded its management structure to increase efficiency, allow for more student leadership opportunities and boost OA's presence on campus throughout the year.

The organization has added the position of Program Coordinator to work directly with Rick Curtis, director of the Outdoor Action Program, and to oversee other specialized student coordinators.

The new structure will relieve Curtis of some of his former responsibilities by assigning them to students.

"Some of the major goals are to give students more ownership and authority in terms of operating the program," said Curtis, who believes that time and human resources rather than funding are the greatest limiting factors in developing the program.

The new positions include Website Manager, Community Manager, Events and Publicity Manager, Paddling Manager and Backpacking Manager. Class Representatives have also been added to increase communication and student representation, although their specific duties have not yet been defined.

The OA Leadership Training Committee developed the new organization structure in conjunction with Curtis over the last several months to "raise the bar" of OA said William Kiefer '04, Leader Trainer Coordinator.

Through the new positions, OA hopes to increase its presence on campus throughout the school year to complement its large freshman orientation program.

"I think there will be more student involvement and more programs. OA will be more accessible to students, and there will be more ways for students to become involved year-round. OA will be playing a larger role in student life on campus," said Anne Kern '04, Leader Trainer Coordinator.

Possible new events to be coordinated by the new managers include an OA Olympics, community service projects, possibly in conjunction with the SVC, and more backpacking and paddling trips throughout the school year.

OA also plans to establish mini workshops for OA leaders and other interested students in such skills as knot-tying and cooking.

"The goal is to be a top flight outdoor program in the Ivy League, to be the best we can be, and to do it in a way that puts student leadership in the forefront of the way we operate," said Curtis.
