Glut of coffee shops drives Ebenezer's out of business

When students head off campus to grab an espresso, they will now have one less coffeehouse to choose from.

Ebenezer's Old World Coffee, formerly located at 80 Nassau Street, has gone out of business. A new branch of nearby Zorba's Grill will take over the vacant storefront.

Several other cafes have opened along Nassau Street in recent years, including Panera Bread.

"There's probably one too many coffee shops in the area," said Bob Menster, a manager at Bucks County Coffee, citing heavy competition as one possible explanation for Ebenezer's Coffee's closure.

A representative from Ebenezer's Coffee was unavailable for comment.

The expansion of Zorba's Grill will serve Greek-American food in a café setting. The current 183 Nassau Street branch of Zorba's Grill offers takeout, but does not include tables where patrons can sit and eat.

The new branch will provide tables and restaurant service.

"People are looking for the space to sit down," a Zorba's Grill employee said.

Ebenezer's Coffee, which served coffee drinks, sandwiches and pastries opened at 80 Nassau Street in 2000, after Einstein Bros. Bagels closed and vacated the site.

In addition to Panera and Bucks County Coffee, Ebenezer's Coffee was competing with Starbucks and Small World Coffee, as well as with Café Vivian in the Frist Campus Center and local shops, such as Olive's.

There is no indication, though, that other coffee shops in the area are also struggling.

Menzer said that profits did not seem to be falling at nearby Bucks County Coffee.
