Fall fashion puts new spin on simplicity, reviving classic colors with a twist

Burn up the catwalk (or McCosh walk!) and strut your stuff in some of this season's hottest looks. It may be cold and bleak outside, but designers inside the couture houses are heating things up with their inspired fall/winter 2002 collections.

Women's Outerwear:

The good news this season is that you don't have to brave frostbite to look good. Top designers are flooding their runways with cozy shearling and fur-accented coats. Lengths vary from ankle-grazing to waistcoat renditions.

A natural texture dominates jackets and vests in earthy, distressed suede tones. Many original pieces feature detailed floral embroidery. The classic black bomber jacket has also made its long-awaited resurgence.

In light of newfound patriotism, designers are turning to military motifs for inspiration. Tailored coats with pocket detailing, piping, and military hardware took center stage at this fall's shows.

Women's Ready-to-wear:

Fall 2002 ready-to-wear designer collections glamorized spring's bohemian chic. Tops are infused with satin ribbons, adding an Edwardian, romantic flair. Bows embellish sleeves slit at the elbow and accentuate empire waistlines.

Velvet, lace, and fur trim highlight much of this fall's fare. A lace-up front top is a must-have for the season. Fabrics are well-fitted with billowy, bell-shaped sleeves.

White is this season's new black. Shows featured models dressed in stark white from head to toe. Pantsuits, skirts, and overcoats work particularly well in winter white hues. Black took on a daring neo-Gothic quality at New York's 2002 fall fashion week. As the antithesis of basic this year, black made a bold, edgy statement in plunging necklines and pencil skirts.

Denim continues its foray into the world of high fashion. Designer labels are finishing jeans with unique washes, denim applique, suede adornments, and formfitting cuts. For evening shine, a touch of metallic, perhaps a key piece in gold lamé, adds a high-octane dash of glitz.

Accessories:

The fall/winter 2002 boot is pointy-toed and embellished with metal buttons, suede ties, buckles, or embroidery. Stiletto sling-backs with ribbon ties up the leg are the superlative statement for feet this season, and crocodile leather pumps or a crocodile evening clutch is the perfect splurge item for day or night.

In keeping with the warm winter theme, designers emphatically agreed upon the extra-long knit scarf wrapped once around the neck and thrown over the shoulder. Oversized hobo handbags and large rectangular totes capture the ready-to-wear theme. Sophisticated onyx jewelry is replacing summer's turquoise fetish. This season's cascading waterfall earring is a slight variation on the elegant chandelier style.

Makeup is dark and sultry with smoky eyes for a dramatic effect. Nails painted in jewel tones and shimmering blackberry hues embody the holiday spirit.

Men's Ready-to-wear:

Lucky for you guys out there, the fall 2002 trends follow one simple rule: back to the basics. Beige is the universal color designers turned to for the essentials.

But not so fast — even the basics this season have an edgy, vintage twist. Again, designers are showing distressed denim with new fades. Pair modern earth tones with basic blue and charcoal gray for an updated effect. Flat-front cords together with layered button-down and crewneck cashmere or cable-knit sweaters are sporty, yet trendy.

And for those cold days and nights, toss on a black leather zip-front anorak to polish your look. Consider a pair of wraparound, clear reflective sunglasses to cut through the winter glare.

The most important tip is to select those pieces that fuse with your own individual style. Being confident and comfortable in what you wear is key to any style, regardless of season.
