Room draw for '04 ends, some left without dorms

Upperclass room draw ended yesterday, leaving a number of students without accomodation, housing officials said.

Room draw is the lottery process through which students select the dormitory rooms in which they would like to reside next year.

This year's process went "very well," undergraduate housing coordinator Adam Rockman said.

The Housing Department was unable to provide housing to all draw applicants, but it is compiling a waiting list, for which applications need to be turned into the Housing Office by April 26, assistant director for housing Lisa DePaul said.

Students who are taken off the waiting list are notified in late August, according to housing forms.

The University does not guarantee upperclassmen housing, according to University regulations.

Still, about 98 percent of students live on campus, Rockman said. Some students live in eating clubs while others live in private housing off-campus.

The University has been able to provide all students on the waiting list with accommodations in the past, DePaul said.

"There was nothing unusual about this year's draw," she said. "Draw is going as it usually does."

In cases where the waiting list is substantially larger than normal, the University has been able to design alternative housing arrangements, DePaul said.

Two years ago, in a "drastic" case, DePaul said the University set up trailers on Alexander Street to house students. The University yielded an unusually large number of freshmen that year, and the waiting list had an unusually high number of upperclassmen, she said.

Rockman predicted that this year's waiting list would be no different than past years.

"From what we can tell preliminarily, it shouldn't be any different from what it normally is," he said.

Dustin Steinhauer '04 is one student who did not receive housing during room draw. He drew with seven other students.

Though he was disappointed, Steinhauer said he understood that everyone could not have good luck.

"Someone, of course, is going to be last," he said. "[This year] it happened to us."

Steinhauer said he would be happy if the University guaranteed housing to all undergraduates, but that he understands it would require building more residential properties.

Eric Boorstin '04, who also was put on the waiting list, said he thought University students should not have to worry about housing.

"I feel the University should guarantee housing to all undergraduates," he said. " And I don't feel I should have to live in Trenton to attend the University."

But Boorstin said he has "a blind-faith in the University to take care of" him and believes the University will provide him with housing next year.

Underclassmen room draw will begin April 15.
