Michael Angelo '04 withdrew his candidacy for USG treasurer late Sunday night, leaving current USG treasurer Michael Kimberly '03 unopposed in his bid for re-election.
The USG treasurer sits on both the projects board and the Trustee Initiative on Alcohol Grant Review Committee and helps decide the distribution of their money, in addition to managing the USG budget.
"I want to emphasize that my decision to withdraw was by no means determined by any decisions of the Elections Committee and that it was completely voluntary," Angelo said.
In his withdrawal statement, Angelo endorsed Kimberly and said he withdrew to devote more time to his current position as class treasurer.
"I believe that my duties will be better fulfilled as treasurer of my class and I have further determined that at this time I may have been a bit over ambitious in my pursuit of USG treasurer," Angelo said in an e-mail. "Also many personal considerations were taken into account when making my decision and I am not at liberty to discuss them as they are 'personal.' I hope that those within the Princeton community will respect my decision and the reasons for it."
He continued, "The Class of 2004 was recently given a very large and important project with and in which I would like very much to be associated and involved. I do not believe I could give the deserved attention to it if elected USG treasurer."
Angelo would not elaborate further on the sophomore class project that he said would be publicized at a later date.
"I believe that I have made the correct decision to withdraw and do so without a doubt that Michael Kimberly will be up to the job of serving our school as its USG treasurer once again," he said.
USG elections co-chair Wade Rakes '02 said Angelo notified the election committee Sunday evening and posted his withdrawal statement.
Students currently holding office in the student government are allowed to run for another office but they are expected to resign an office should they win, according to Rakes.
Angelo said he plans to run for re-election in the spring as class treasurer.
