Six University faculty members were elected as new fellows by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences April 26.

They were elected along with 179 other new fellows, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and actors Woody Allen and Paul Newman. Nathan Seiberg, Institute of Advanced Study professor was also elected for his contributions to super-symmetric theory and string theory.

The academy, which was founded during the Revolutionary War by John Adams and other national leaders, serves to honor men and women who have excelled in the arts and sciences, business, public affairs and scholarship.

The Academy also conducts projects and studies addressing contemporary social issues, which include the emerging challenges of scientific and technological advances, geo-global politics, population and the environment, according to the its website.

Cooper, the Stuart Professor of Philosophy, who writes and teaches ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, said in an e-mail he does not know what his role will be as a fellow until after he becomes a member. "I would expect to become involved in some committee work, however," he said.

Zeitlin agreed, "I tend to be proactive in all my undertakings. I would be more than happy to take such a role in the Academy." Her primary field is classics, specializing in ancient Greek language, literature and society. She also has an appointment in comparative literature and directs the Program in Jewish Studies.

Others, like economics professors Bernanke and Abreu, said they planned to serve a mostly honorary role as new fellows. Abreu, who specializes in economic theory and game theory, said in an e-mail, "Typically the primary function of fellows is to nominate new fellows. I look forward to doing so. However, I would certainly be willing to serve on an appropriate committee if the opportunity arose."

Cooper said he was honored by the recognition. "I was pleased, of course. Everyone likes recognition, and election by the American Academy is a significant honor for any academic," he said. "I am especially pleased to be joining my eight colleagues in the Princeton philosophy department who preceded me in election to the academy."

Zeitlin's was also pleased by the honor. "I felt enormously pleased and flattered by this honor," she said. "Which I felt reflected not only on me and whatever I have accomplished over the years, but also on Princeton University, which has given me so much encouragement and support in all my endeavors."

They also agreed they were flattered to be elected along with famous pop culture stars.

Cooper explained, "It also pleases me that among those that I will have as Fellow-inductees this fall will be Woody Allen, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward and Diana Rigg!"
