The Princeton University Orchestra will be performing "The Planets" under the direction of its conductor, Michael Pratt, this weekend in Richardson Auditorium at 8 p.m. tonight through Saturday. These concerts will be the last of the 2000-2001 season.
The first piece of the program will be Serge Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 in Dmajor, Op. 19. Sean-Avram Carpenter '03 will be the featured violinist .
Carpenter is one of the winners of the Orchestra's annual Concerto Competition. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Steinway Hall and Juilliard's Paul Hall.
He is a recipient of the NSAA/Arts Award for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts for "Outstanding Achievement and Promise."
Carpenter is currently studying under Anna Lim and Mark Steinberg at Princeton.
During the second half of the program, the orchestra will perform "The Planets" — the best known work of British composer Gustav Holst.
The piece is scored for a large orchestra and a wordless choir. In these performances, the vocals will be sung by the women of the Princeton University Glee Club under the direction of Richard Tang Yuk.
The seven movements of "The Planets" are evocations of the astroglogical and mystical qualities of each planets represented.
