Not just belly dancing

"Raks Odalisque is Princeton's only Middle Eastern dance troupe. We started as a class at Dillon Gym, meeting once a week for an hour. Our instructor, Kim Leary, showed us the basic elements of belly dancing, and we wanted to do more than just take classes. As there are no other groups on campus that perform Middle Eastern dance, we decided to take it upon ourselves to show the Princeton community this often misunderstood dance form.

"The troupe was informally founded two years ago, during April of 1999, when we first decided to perform at Communiversity. The members at this time only had eight months of training. Since then, we have performed at the International Festival in 2000 and 2001 and at Communiversity in 2000.

"This year, we bring you our first annual Spring performance. The troupe will be performing dance styles from all around the Middle East, from Egypt to Turkey, as well as pieces inspired by Gypsy, Flamenco and modern dance. "Raks Odalisque, First Annual Spring Show," will be Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Wilson Black Box. Tickets are $5 at the door. — ABIGAIL KEYES
