Eclectic collage of dance, music and expression

Even if you missed the eye-catching posters of the black-clad Expressions members hailing their upcoming show, rest assured that you will have your chance to catch the dance group in full effect tonight through Saturday at 8 p.m. in Theatre~Intime.

According to artistic directors Ali Bauer '02 and Helene Goldsmith '02, the Expressions Spring Show contains an eclectic mix of dances, varying in form, music and size. The 13-piece performance includes jazz, tap, lyrical ballet and hip-hop dance styles, all set to contemporary pop music.

In addition to top 40 fare, such as "Bodyrock" by Moby, "Don't Tell Me" by Madonna and "Again" by Lenny Kravitz, the Expressions' song selection includes "Everything" from the "Thomas Crowne Affair" soundtrack and "Mummer's Dance" from the movie "Ever After."

One particular tap piece rather uniquely employs sheet metal, plywood and a ladder as its instrumental backdrop.

The pieces range in size as well, varying from a small, two-person piece to other selections that include the entire dance company.

Commenting on the variety of the show, one Expressions member noted that "everybody has a different dance background, but we're all great dancers."

Besides showcasing the dance talents of the Expressions members, several other campus groups will receive stage time during the roughly two-hour show as well.

Music of the a cappella group Shere Khan and guest performances by former Expressions members will fill the breaks. The Holy Smokes, a band comprised of Princeton undergraduates, will perform during one evening's intermission as well.

After holding auditions at the beginning of the spring semester, adding one new member to their ranks, the 11 ladies that comprise the all-female dance group have been working on the show's pieces since early February.

As Bauer and Goldsmith explained, the Expressions members choreographed all the dances presented this weekend, with each member given the opportunity to create her own piece.

Although they take their dancing seriously — rehearsing seven to eight hours a night as the show's opening nears and four days a week during the rest of the semester — Bauer, Goldsmith and Expressions president Nicole Amato stressed that their hard work results in a fun and interesting evening for their audience.

"We do a little of everything," Goldsmith said, promising that the eclectic show will offer something appealing for all in attendance.
