McGillicuddy '52 honored by Ivy Football Association

John McGillicuddy '52 was recognized at the Ivy Football Association dinner at the Pierre Hotel March 22. Eight graduates of Ivy institutions were honored for excellence in their post-graduate fields at the event. The list included such luminaries as legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and former Baltimore mayor Kurt Schmoke.

McGillicuddy was a two-time varsity letter winner for the Tigers as a defensive back. He also returned 30 punts for the 1951 squad, a school record that stood until 1994.

The Princeton teams Mc-Gillicuddy played on — the 1950 and 1951 squads — both finished their seasons a perfect 9-0. In 1950 and 1951, the Tigers outscored their opponents by an average of 28.3 and 25.3 points per game, respectively. The 1950 season featured a 63-26 slaughter of Harvard and a 47-12 thumping of Yale — not to mention a 66-0 squeaker over Williams.

In 1958, McGillicuddy joined Manufacturers Hanover Trust, and has been a driving force in banking ever since. By 1971, McGillicuddy had risen to Vice Chairman of the Board of Manufacturers Hanover Corporation, and became Chairman and CEO in 1979. Since 1991, he has been the Chairman and CEO of the Chemical Banking Corporation.
