Poll overturns admission

Following an overwhelming response to a Daily Princetonian online poll, newly admitted member of the Class of 2005 Tarleton Cowen's acceptance has been rescinded, Acting Dean of Admission Stephen LeMenager said yesterday.

Approximately 87 percent of University students responded negatively to the poll question: "Should Tarleton Cowen have been admitted to Princeton?"

LeMenager explained his office's decision in an interview conducted via e-mail. "Cowen obviously did not have a mandate from the student body," he said.

Nevertheless, Cowen was not without her admirers. The entire Quadrangle Club appears to have voted in favor of her acceptance.

Cowen's grandfather, who is a Princeton alum, bemoaned what he termed the University's "bogus" admissions criteria.

"Don't legacies and prep school diplomas mean anything any more?" he scoffed. Cowen attends Milton Academy in Milton, Mass.

Interviewed poolside at a women's water polo game, Dean of Admission Fred Hargadon — who is on leave this year — seemed ambivalent about the rescinded offer.

"I mean, she wasn't an athlete," he said, shrugging his shoulders and looking for No. 8.
