Buzzing off to So SoCal?

With California as one of Princeton's biggest feeder states, and its attractive 80 degree weather, many of you may be heading out West this weekend. If you happen to be anywhere within driving distance, make sure to check out the biggest thing to hit Southern Cal since 90210. The recently completed Getty Center, a complex of luminous limestone designed by Frank Gerry gleams above the city and is the most talked about and highly touted museum in Los Angeles ever.

Though parking places are booked until next year, admission is free. So hike, bus, cab or copter in to check out this amazing structure. Once you arrive at the site you tram up to the Center that is actually better known for its educational and research facilities as well high tech and aesthetically impressive displays than for its impressive collection.

The newly acquired permanent collection includes seven areas of art encompassing Greek and Roman antiquities, Manuscripts and Decorative Arts (read: fully furnished rooms straight out of Versailles) and Contemporary American and European photography. Make sure you stop by the temporary exhibitions open just through the end of break. With full-scale models, "Making Architecture: The Getty Center from Concept through Construction" traces the evolution of this revolutionary building of smooth lines and natural rock formations and a stunning "living sculpture" – a garden environment composed of native plants.

Even more intriguing is "Capturing Time: A Celebration of Photography," over 100 photos that examine the element of time as a photographic subject.

If you're hungry, the super-chic and ultra-gourmet cafe presents "A Matter of Taste: Alexis Smith's Commission for the Getty Center Restaurant." It brings a range of images of the word 'taste' in what amounts to be a mural to invoke "taste's" many connotations.
