Instead of empathy, try compassion

“Thus, as each of us endeavor to support and comfort our friends as the semester comes to an end, I suggest a way to help them without hurting ourselves. Instead of empathy, try compassion.”

What I’ve learned about midterms

“As a senior, I feel like my time at Princeton has flown by, which may be partly due to the fact that I wasn’t physically on campus for 18 months of ‘the college experience.’ But I also think it is because we here at Princeton don’t focus so much on coming full circle, but instead on riding the nebulous grading curve.”

Texas abortion law proves that, once again, bodily autonomy is fragile

“The enforcement of such a law, as well as its failure to be challenged thus far on a legal basis, shows the ongoing necessity of vigilant advocacy for reproductive rights, and acts as a harrowing reminder of the fragility of liberties that were so arduously won.”

Hurricane Ida made clear that the Orange Bubble is not invincible. Now what?

“It’s easy to feel protected by the Orange Bubble. But if Hurricane Ida showed us anything, it is that the climate crisis is at our doorstep and time is a luxury we no longer have.”

Thus Spoke The Undergrads: On being a filthy cheater

“As a friend of the girlfriend’s, you should share what you know. Yet your role as a confidant means you agreed to keep your friend’s secret quiet. If they thought you would share it with their girlfriend, they probably would not have told you that they were cheating. In this situation, obligation gives us no decisive answer about what you should do.”

Thus Spoke the Undergrads: On noisy roommate sex

“Is there a moral issue here? Can sex and sleep be weighed using a utilitarian metric? And what obligation does a roommate have to fulfill the requests of their neighbor? To answer any of these questions, you, our dear questioner, will first have to confront your roommate.”

The power of anonymity in stories of consent

“It is the necessity of anonymity that reveals how problematic our society remains and uncovers the consequences that still persist in chastising women who speak out about traumatic experiences, which are deeply upsetting and often triggering to relive.”

Dropping standardized testing requirements is changing the face of college admissions

The University should remember that although testing may serve as a barrier to many, it also allows students who succeed in testing environments to showcase their academic potential. While testing need not play the essential role it once did, the University should not disregard it altogether.
