Women's Basketball: Beyond the box score, a ‘winner’ emerges

In the statistics-driven world of modern athletics, skilled players who don’t rack up tons of points often go unnoticed in the shuffle of rosters, depth charts and stat sheets. Junior point guard Lauren Polansky of the women’s basketball team doesn’t score an average of 17.7 points per game, like junior forward Niveen Rasheed has done this year, but Polansky’s team-first attitude, defensive intensity and disciplined leadership on the court are beyond replacement.

Two weeks ago, the wrestling team had what head coach Chris Ayres called its best performance since he began coaching the Tigers in 2006. Princeton had the best finish of any Ivy League team at the Keystone Open in Philadelphia, finishing fourth overall. Junior 149-pounder Luis Ramos has been a mainstay on the team for his skill, intensity and humor. Rather than enter a long offseason until next fall arrives, members of the men’s and women’s cross country teams head straight into preparations for the indoor track campaign. However, while cross country, as well as winter and spring track, all essentially involve running races, for the Princeton runners, the seasons are distinctly different.

The men’s hockey team has been in nonstop action this fall, even giving up their Thanksgiving break to travel to Denver, Colo., where they came away with a loss to Denver and a win over Providence. Princeton (3-7-1 overall, 2-5 ECAC), who last won the ECAC in 2008 and also appeared in the 2009 NCAA tournament, currently sits in ninth in the ECAC standings with four points. The ‘Prince’ looks at the conference competitors and how the Tigers stack up under first-year head coach Bob Prier.

Women's Hockey: Power-play woes extend losing streak to 6 games

The women’s ice hockey team traveled to New England over Thanksgiving weekend for two non-conference contests. The Tigers faced stiff competition in their games against the No. 4 Boston College Golden Eagles and the New Hampshire Wildcats. Princeton struggled over the holiday weekend, dropping both games and extending its losing streak to six games.

The women’s basketball team hardly rested for its Thanksgiving break, as Princeton added two more wins to its collection, improving to 6-0 this season. On Friday, the Tigers rolled over Davidson for a 53-44 victory, which they followed with a devastating 75-55 win over local rival Rider on Sunday.

In its first of two games in the Denver Cup Classic, the men’s hockey team outshot its opponent but ceded the scoreboard in a 3-0 shutout. But Princeton reversed the pattern on Saturday, ending its three-game losing streak with a win over Providence in the event’s second and final game.

Men's Basketball: Defense falters late as Tigers drop 2 of 3 at tourney

The men’s basketball team dropped its first two games before thoroughly dismantling West Alabama in the TicketCity Legends Classic over Thanksgiving weekend. Princeton (2-5) struggled in its opening games against Bucknell (5-2) and Morehead State (3-4), losing 62-56 and 68-56, respectively. The Tigers recovered on Sunday afternoon to pummel Division-II West Alabama (1-6) by 24 points, but they still face many questions after a rough opening stretch.

In a less-than-surprising announcement, freshman running back Chuck Dibilio was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. Elsewhere in the league, a double-overtime victory spared Columbia from a winless season, but it was not enough to save head coach Norries Wilson's job.

Men's Basketball: Shooting woes upset Princeton

At the brink of a one-point loss in the final seconds, senior guard Doug Davis just couldn’t do it again. Davis’s three-point attempt bounced off the rim and backboard as the buzzer rang, and the Tigers suffered a 56-55 loss to Elon on Tuesday night. But in the end, it won’t be that missed shot that haunts the Tigers — Princeton will be most afflicted by the 22 it missed in a dismal first half.

Well, this wasn’t a great season, was it? The Princeton Football Tigers were not brilliant this year. A 1-9 overall (1-6 Ivy League) finish was not what they were hoping for, and it may not necessarily be what they deserved. But it’s what they got, and it’s what we’re all stuck with, at least until September. But, amid the gloom, there is — without a shadow of doubt — reason to be cautiously optimistic about the future of the program.

Before Sunday, I had always imagined marathon courses as something analogous to gladiator arenas. I imagined the runners as the gladiators. I even pictured a crowd of riotous spectators and a Russell Crowe clone emerging victorious from battle. But running in the Philadelphia Marathon was not quite as I imagined.

Men's Hockey: Ranked opponents drop Princeton in N.Y.

The men’s ice hockey team faced two top-20 opponents on the road this weekend as they continue conference play. The Tigers (2-6-1 overall, 2-5 ECAC) were blanked by No. 17 Cornell (5-2, 5-1) in their game Friday night 4-0 and dropped their game 4-1 on Saturday afternoon to No. 16 Colgate (8-4-1, 4-2). It was the first time Princeton had to face two ranked opponents in two consecutive days.
