Men's Hockey: Final home weekend for seniors at Baker Rink

The Tigers sit in 10th place in the ECAC after their 6-2 win over the Engineers in Troy, N.Y., last weekend. Princeton no longer has a chance of hosting a first-round playoff series at Baker Rink, but it could finish anywhere between ninth and 12th in the league, depending on this weekend’s performance.

Sophomore forward Andrew Calof leads his teammates in goals and assists in the regular season. Calof has scored 11 goals and earned 12 assists for a combined 23 points. Another sophomore forward, Jack Berger, sits in second place on the team with nine goals and 11 assists. Junior defenseman Michael Sdao, junior forward Rob Kleebaum and senior captain Marc Hagel follow on the points leaderboard.

The Tigers’ two netminders, sophomore Sean Bonar and junior Mike Condon, have almost evenly split the starting position, with Bonar in the goal for 15 games and Condon in for 12. Condon, who possesses the better record, has taken over the starting spot in the second half of the season. At 4-5-3 in the cage, he has a .921 save percentage and a 2.79 goals against average, making a remarkable 57 saves in a 3-0 defeat at Union in last weekend.

Yale (12-13-2, 9-10-1) stands in a seventh-place tie with St. Lawrence in the ECAC standings after it overcame Dartmouth 5-3 and Harvard 7-1 in New Haven, Conn., last weekend. In 27 games this season, the Bulldogs have averaged 3.48 goals per game, second in the league behind nationally-ranked Union. Yale has limited its opponents to only 2.75 goals per game.

Forward Brian O’Neill leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 18 goals and 18 assists for 36 points. Kenny Agostino has scored 13 goals, added 15 helpers and earned 28 points. Andrew Miller and Antoine Laganiere have also racked up over 20 points apiece. The team’s main netminder, Jeff Malcolm, has started 22 games with a 9-11-2 record. He has a .911 save percentage and a 2.70 goals against average.

The Bulldogs are undefeated in seven games against Princeton over the past three seasons. The only tie in that span came in October, when the Tigers pulled out a 2-2 draw in overtime. Sdao’s five points led the Tigers in those seven matchups, followed by Calof, Kleebaum and Hagel with four.

Bonar and Condon have each started in the cage against Yale this season. Bonar made 28 saves while Yale’s netminder made 26 in the October tie. In January, Condon made 43 saves when the Bulldogs were ranked No. 20 in the nation, but Yale found the net six times for an easy victory.

Brown (8-15-4, 5-12-3) currently rests in last place in the ECAC standings and has gone 0-7-1 in its last eight games, beginning with its 6-2 loss at Dartmouth on Jan. 27. The Bears fell to Dartmouth once again this past weekend, losing 4-1 after tying Harvard 3-3 at home. The team averages 2.50 goals per game and has allowed 2.75.

Brown’s Jack Maclellan has amassed 15 goals and 15 assists this season, with a total of 30 points. Ryan Jacobson follows with 11 goals and 19 points. The team’s other top scorers average 14 points overall. The main goalkeeper, Mike Clemente, has started 21 games and has a 8-13-2 record in the cage, with a .905 save percentage and a 2.68 goals against average.

The Bears have also hosted Princeton twice this season. Brown squeezed out a 3-2 win in October,  but the Tigers won by the same score in a tight overtime at Meehan Auditorium. Calof leads in number of points against the Bears, with eight points over his two-season career. Sdao has seven points against Brown, while senior defenseman Derrick Pallis has earned five. Condon defended the cage for both of the 2011-12 season games and has stopped 121 out of 131 Brown shots over the course of his career.

Princeton averages 2.63 goals per game in its 32 games this season, while Condon and Bonar have on average allowed 2.87 goals per game by their opponents. The Tigers maintain a 4-3-3 record at home this season, with their biggest win against then-No. 12 Colgate, 6-2.

Princeton has gone 3-9 on the road and 1-2-1 in its matchups against Yale and Brown, losing to each opponent once.
