Football: Comeback falls short at Harvard

A deficit is almost never easy to deal with. A deficit of 26 points is definitely never easy to handle. A deficit of 26 points on the road against a bitter rival that looks well on its way to winning the league might as well be insurmountable. But when he found his team down 35-9 early in the third quarter at Harvard on Saturday, senior quarterback Tommy Wornham would not let the Tigers simply roll over.

Men's Water Polo: Princeton clinches regular-season Southern Division title at home

Despite some pipe damage at DeNunzio Pool earlier in the week that kept the men’s water polo team from regular training, the No. 14 Tigers showed their strength in a three-game weekend against George Washington, Fordham and Iona. A 12-8 win against George Washington on Friday night allowed the Tigers to clinch their second CWPA Southern Division regular season title in three years with a 6-2 record.

Football: Tigers prepare for rivalry date in Cambridge

The football team will play its second-straight Ivy League road match this weekend, going up to Cambridge, Mass., to take on Harvard in the annual rivalry game. The Tigers (1-4 overall, 1-1 Ivy League) are in the middle of the Ivy League standings, and a win over Harvard (4-1, 2-0) would not only put them in a solid position in the conference but also double last year’s win total.

Women's Hockey: Team opens play at Baker Rink

The women’s hockey team takes the ice for the first time this season, opening up the 2011-12 campaign at home this weekend. The Tigers will start against Northeastern at Baker Rink on Friday, followed by another home contest on Saturday against Niagara. Princeton will look for early success in the start of the new season, attempting to improve on last year’s 16-14-1 record and fourth-place league finish with a team that returns 82 percent of its point production.

Men's Water Polo: Burst pipe in DeNunzio spoils midweek practices

After sweeping three games to move into first place in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division, it was business as usual for the men’s water polo team this week. Business as usual, that is, until Tuesday afternoon, when an unexpected disaster struck — a pipe burst in the building of DeNunzio Pool, forcing the team to move practice to Dillon Gymnasium on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I was at the New Meadowlands (or MetLife Stadium, as the many, many signs will remind you) this past Monday night, with tickets courtesy of the Butler College Office, to watch the Jets play the Dolphins, and it should have been an experience good enough to fill a column. I’ve probably watched somewhere in the ballpark of 300 NFL games on television in my life (or 900 hours, or ... 37.5 days, yikes), but this was the first one I had ever seen in person. More than that, it was Monday night.

Women's Volleyball: King ’01: Coming home to coach

Princeton volleyball is a way of life for Sabrina King ’01. The first-year women’s volleyball coach has had Tiger blood running through her veins since 1997, when she won her first Ivy League title as a freshman. She capped a very successful undergraduate volleyball career with additional league titles as a junior and senior. King was also named Ivy League Player of the Year in 1999.

Every year and every season, several athletes abandon their childhood pastimes and quit their sports teams, often leaving dismayed coaches, disheartened teammates and disappointed selves in their wake. A small number of these former athletes, though, do not voluntarily leave their sports, and they avoid the label of “quitter.” Though they resist change, these athletes ultimately succumb to a nagging, unsympathetic plague: injury.

Tennis: Siow, Spindler take doubles at regional

The men’s tennis team competed in its biggest tournament of the fall season this weekend, sending nine Tigers to the International Tennis Association Northeast Regional at Cornell. Juniors Matt Siow and Matt Spindler took home the doubles title, while junior Matija Pecotic reached the semifinals of the singles bracket.

Women's Soccer: Princeton wins 4th straight in 5-1 rout at Roberts Stadium

The women’s soccer team was dominant on Tuesday night at Roberts Stadium as it defeated the Utah Valley Wolverines 5-1. Princeton outshot Utah Valley 21-5 in an impressive win that extended the Tigers’ current streak to four games. The hosts jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in this game and never looked back, as Utah Valley’s only goal would come late in the second half.

Picture the scene: Heading into the final game of the football season, Princeton’s proud Tigers boast an astonishing 10-0 overall record, having outscored their opponents 339-0. The last matchup is a classic clash with the fearsome Yale Bulldogs in New Haven, but after having consecutively destroyed squads from Rutgers, Navy and Penn State earlier in the year, the Tigers have reason to believe they’ll be just fine in Connecticut.

After the men’s soccer team plays its last games of the season, junior goalkeeper Max Gallin may try his hand at some new activities during the off-season, one of which involves becoming a televised yoga instructor. The Tigers have faced some difficult teams this season, including a last-minute loss to Columbia on Saturday night. The ‘Prince’ sat down with the junior goalkeeper, who is described by teammate and junior defender David Dubow as “the most nice, energetic, friendly person” he knows.

The men’s golf team walked away from Shelter Harbor Golf Club this weekend with a solid fourth-place finish out of 15 teams. But it was junior Bernie D’Amato who stole the spotlight on Sunday afternoon by wining a pressure-filled playoff against an Ivy League rival to take first place overall.
