The field hockey team saw its season come to a close on Saturday afternoon, when the Tigers fell 3-2 to No. 4-seed Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies took an early lead and never let go, though the Tigers kept the game competitive throughout.

Women's Volleyball: Seniors go out with exciting home sweep

Seniors Cathryn Quinn, Hillary Ford and Michaela Venuti of the women’s volleyball team ended their Princeton careers in impressive fashion Saturday evening, recording a thrilling five-game win over Columbia a night after sweeping Cornell. By going undefeated in the final weekend of the season, the Tigers (18-8 overall, 11-3 Ivy League) finished the season alone in second place, behind Yale, which clinched the title with a sweep over Harvard on Friday night.

In a fast-paced game that turned into a blowout in the final stages, the women’s basketball team opened its season with a 79-62 victory over St. Joseph’s. The Tigers suffered a tough overtime loss to the Hawks last year but got revenge thanks to a full-court press that forced 28 turnovers, paired with strong offensive performances from junior forwards Niveen Rasheed and Kate Miller.

The women’s volleyball team will close out its 2011 season this weekend with home matches against Cornell and Columbia. Princeton (16-8 overall, 9-3 Ivy League) is currently tied with the Lions (15-8, 9-3) for second place in league play heading into the final weekend. The Tigers still have a shot at winning the Ivy League title, but they will need to not only win both matches this weekend, but also have Yale lose both of its final contests.

As the men’s ice hockey team enters its third week of regular-season play, it hopes to reverse the tide of its opening games. The Tigers captured their only win a week ago at Harvard, when sophomore forward Eric Carlson helped cap a first-period advantage. As Princeton prepares to host St. Lawrence tonight at 7 p.m. and Clarkson tomorrow at 4 p.m., the Tigers must not only take more early leads, but also use their most recent away game against Dartmouth as a reminder to follow through on early advantages.

Fall Break was not particularly eventful in Chevy Chase, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C. Born and raised in the area, I will gladly praise the nation’s capital as one of the best cities in America. But, thanks to Princeton’s Office of Poor Vacation Scheduling, I now know that ridin’ solo in any city is not nearly as fun as Jason Derulo makes it out to be. Without my party-rocking high school crew, all of whom attend universities with reasonable Fall Break schedules, the energetic city I have grown to love was as entertaining as deriving the Slutsky equation.

Sprint Football: Questions surround program’s future

In the first game of the 1999 season, the sprint football team did something that it hasn’t done in an official game since: win. Following their 12-7 victory over Cornell at home, the Tigers dropped the next five games of the 1999 campaign. The next season, they went winless again. And then again. And then again. Since that fall day, the Tigers have dropped 80 straight official games.

The men’s and women’s teams are looking forward to building on their successes from last season, as the women also won their 10th league title in the past 12 years. However, both teams have some hard work ahead to continue their tradition. The Tigers lost many strong swimmers to graduation and are looking to their freshman class to step up to the challenge.
