Football: Freshman corner Gaffney breaks out for Tigers

After returning a kickoff 59 yards to trigger a thrilling come from behind win for the football team, freshman cornerback Anthony Gaffney has proven himself up to the challenge of starting for the Tigers and has shown that he has the maturity to make big plays in big situations. While the football program run by head coach Bob Surace ’90 and a Princeton diploma certainly factored into Gaffney’s decision to join the Tigers, it was the Orange Bubble’s proximity to home that drew him the most.

Women's Soccer: Late rally keeps hosts perfect in league play

With three other Princeton victories over Harvard earlier in the day, the women’s soccer team was not to be outdone Saturday night, defeating Harvard 3-1 to preserve its undefeated Ivy League record and bring its overall record to 10-3-1. The game was close in the beginning, but the Tigers pulled away toward the end of the game, scoring two goals in two minutes to secure the victory.

Field Hockey: No. 2 Princeton hands No. 4 UConn 1st loss

The field hockey team continued its impressive play this weekend with a couple of home wins over Harvard and Connecticut. The big game was against Connecticut on Sunday (16-1), which was undefeated coming into the game. The No. 4 Huskies are the sixth ranked team that No. 2 Princeton (13-1 overall, 5-0 Ivy League) has had to play so far in the season. The Tigers have succeeded in all but one of these matchups, in which they fell to then-No. 2 Syracuse.

Men's Soccer: Wettermann scores game-winner in OT

After 102 minutes of relentless, physical play, the men’s soccer team created a final great opportunity deep in the Harvard end when senior defender Mark Linnville launched a long throw-in from the left sideline. Linnville’s toss sailed into the box, flicking the head of freshman defender Josh Miller in traffic and bouncing up in the air before settling at the feet of sophomore midfielder Alex Wettermann. Wettermann took a quick settling touch with space before rocketing a right-footed shot from 12 yards out, beating the keeper to the right. The goal, the first of Wettermann’s Princeton career, catapulted Princeton to a 2-1 victory over the rival Crimson and incited mass celebration at Roberts Stadium on Saturday evening.

Sports Shorts: Volleyball, sprint teams defeated

Despite a career-high 18 kills from sophomore middle blocker Tiana Woolridge, the women’s volleyball team surrendered a 2-0 lead and fell to Penn in five sets on Friday evening. After a series of close defeats, the sprint football team was blown out by Army on Saturday afternoon, while the crews opened 2012-13 competition at the Head of the Charles regatta.

Football: Princeton's comeback stuns Harvard, 39-34

With less than 30 seconds left to play in Saturday's football game, the undefeated Harvard Crimson was closing in on sophomore quarterback Quinn Epperly. Princeton was down 34-32, sophomore starting quarterback Connor Michelsen was injured, the homecoming crowd of 10,823 was on its feet, and Epperly was on the wrong foot as he hurled the ball toward the end zone.The ball fell into the arms of junior receiver Roman Wilson. He held on as he hit the ground. The Crimson looked on in disbelief as the Tigers roared.

On Tap with ... Spenser Huston

Sophomore Spenser Huston is the starting left tackle for the football team, which hosts its homecoming game against Harvard this weekend. Huston was the only freshman to start on Princeton’s offensive line last season and has continued to have success this year. He even scored a touchdown last week against Brown, a very rare and special feat for an offensive lineman. Huston sat down with the ‘Prince’ to talk about the Garden State, rap music and his first touchdown ever.

The football team is set to face its biggest challenge of the year in its biggest game of the year when it hosts defending Ivy League champion Harvard on Saturday. The Crimson (5-0 overall, 2-0 Ivy League) has won its last 14 games, dating back to last season, and is looking to beat Princeton (3-2, 2-0) for the sixth straight time.

Hoping to extend its four-game win streak even further, the field hockey team will host an Ivy League opponent as well as a fellow top-five team at Bedford Field this weekend. Princeton (11-1 overall, 4-0 Ivy League), currently ranked second in the nation, will face off against Harvard (3-9, 1-3) on Saturday afternoon and turn around to play No. 4 Connecticut (15-0) the following day.

Soccer: Long throws pay big dividends

In the ninth minute of the men’s soccer team’s nationally televised home game against Creighton last week, senior defender Mark Linnville perfectly executed one of Princeton’s most important assets: the long throw-in. His driven toss from the sideline sailed into the box, grazing the head of sophomore forward Cameron Porter before sophomore midfielder Myles McGinley slotted the loose ball into the back of the net, giving Princeton an early lead.That goal marked just one of many such chances created this season by Linnville’s unique ability, allowing the team to create dangerous scoring opportunities from any throw-in in the attacking third of the field.

Women's Volleyball: Late starter Peterkin makes early impact

To excel at competitive volleyball, starting at a young age is typically a requirement. Even for those who pick up the game before they reach middle school, long-term success and a collegiate career are anything but guaranteed. In this respect, freshman right side hitter Kendall Peterkin is an anomaly. Whereas most of her peers started before their 10th birthdays, she didn’t begin playing seriously until her freshman year of high school.

Men's Cross Country: Juniors lead Tigers in loaded Wisconsin field

Forging ahead through the crowded field of the Wisconsin Invitational last Friday, juniors Alejandro Arroyo-Yamin, Tyler Udland and co-captain Chris Bendtsen worked together to fight toward the finish line, leading the rest of the men’s cross country team. No longer led by Olympian Donn Cabral ’12 and the rest of the Class of 2012, the Tigers begin a new era. By forming a pack and pushing each other at the front, the three juniors and the rest of the Princeton men behind them hope to make their team more than just the sum of its individual parts.

New concussion rules help players keep their heads up

During the second fall lacrosse practice in early September, sophomore midfielder Paul Zima was going for a ground ball when he got hit by a teammate. Afterward, Zima said he felt “a little bit dizzy and out of it.” He continued playing for a few more minutes, but since the feelings of disorientation continued he decided to go see the trainer. The trainer took Zima inside and led him through a series of verbal cognitive tests. After a doctor went over the results, Zima was diagnosed with a concussion.This past summer, the Ivy League put in place new measures intended to help prevent concussions in lacrosse and soccer. These restrictions follow similar ones made to Ivy League football schedules in the summer of 2011, and new recommendations to prevent concussions in hockey are expected in December.

The men’s golf team finished fourth of 19 teams at the Big Five Classic in Philadelphia this weekend. Junior Greg Jarmas led the field at plus-1 after the first round and finished with a two-round score of plus-6, tied for second among individuals.

Men's Soccer: Tigers play 4th straight OT game, take 0-0 draw

The men’s soccer team (5-4-2 overall, 1-0-2 Ivy League) is streaking, although not in the traditional sense. On Saturday, the Tigers played their fourth consecutive game that went to extra time. The streak started with a Sept. 29 win over Ivy League foe Dartmouth, the team’s first game of the season to exceed regulation. Princeton has collected a 1-1-2 record over the span, which includes all three of the team’s conference games and a golden goal defeat at the hands of No. 24 Creighton last Tuesday.
