Men's Golf: Jarmas ties for 2nd in Philly

The men’s golf team finished fourth of 19 teams at the Big Five Classic in Philadelphia this weekend. Junior Greg Jarmas led the field at plus-1 after the first round and finished with a two-round score of plus-6, tied for second among individuals.

The tournament was characterized by slow play, particularly in Saturday’s first round, in which the golfers played in foursomes. Only one player posted a round of par or better at Philmont Country Club: Temple’s Brandon Matthews came from behind on Sunday with a 1-under-par 69 to win the tournament by one stroke.

Princeton topped the other Ivy League teams in the field, finishing four strokes in front of seventh place Yale, which initially finished fourth but had a player disqualified for a scorecard error. Junior Nicholas Ricci tied for 22nd at plus-15, while senior Bernie D’Amato tied for 34th at plus-17.

Jarmas isn’t the only Tiger with a standout performance this month; last week, freshman Quinn Prchal led the competitive Brickyard Collegiate in Georgia after two rounds before finishing tied for eighth. The rookie couldn’t repeat his success this weekend, tying for 57th at plus-22 after shooting an opening-round 86.

The Tigers will wrap up fall play next weekend with the Ivy Match Play Championship, held at TPC Jasna Polona, located about two miles west of the University.
