Women's Volleyball: Yale tops Tigers to claim conference title

With a 3-0 victory over Brown on Friday, the women’s volleyball team set up a showdown with first-place Yale to keep its conference title hopes alive. But at Dillon Gymnasium on Saturday evening, the Bulldogs won a three-set battle over the Tigers (12-10 overall, 9-3 Ivy League) to clinch the outright Ivy League crown.

No. 2 Princeton (16-1 overall, 7-0 Ivy League), which has won at least a share of the league championship in 18 of the past 19 seasons, will now turn its focus to postseason play in the NCAA tournament, which begins this week.

Men's Tennis: Pecotic wins Texas title

Senior Matija Pecotic of the men’s tennis team continued a stellar fall season last weekend, winning the main singles draw of the Texas Fall Invitational. Pecotic, who entered the tournament as the second seed, won four matches without losing a set to claim his fourth individual title of the fall.

Women's Soccer: Tigers secure 7-0 Ivy season, NCAA berth

After defeating Cornell 5-1 on Oct. 27, the women’s soccer team found itself on the brink of glory. The Tigers needed just one more win to clinch the outright Ivy League title and to become one of the few teams to go 7-0 in conference play. The only team standing in their way was Penn, the same team that ended Princeton’s title hopes two years ago at Roberts Stadium.Playing on the same field, the Tigers were determined to see a different outcome and they got it. Behind sophomore midfielder Lauren Lazo’s three-goal effort and senior midfielder Caitlin Blosser’s put-away score, Princeton (13-3-1 overall, 7-0 Ivy League) defeated the Quakers (9-6-1, 5-2) 4-2 and earned a bid to the NCAA tournament.

The football team's game against Penn could mostly be summarized in one word: mistakes. After going on their first four-game win streak since 2006 earlier this season, the Tigers (4-4 overall, 3-2 Ivy League) have started showing hints of the group that went 1-9 in each of the last two seasons. With a 28-21 loss to the Quakers today, Princeton lost control of its own chances for the Ivy League title.

Cross Country: Bendtsen leads men to 3rd straight title

At last Saturday’s Ivy League cross country championships, the Princeton men had something to prove. The Tigers were two-time defending champions, but this year they were not the favorites. No. 10 Columbia was the team to beat, and many picked the fit and fast Lions to decisively hand the Tigers only their second loss in seven years.But when the gun went off for the 8K championship race at West Windsor Fields, it was all business for the Tigers, and they did not lose on their home course. Dominating the race from the start, the men had their best day of the season, as they easily ran away with the conference crown.

Football: Princeton falls on the road to Cornell, 37-35

The football team saw its hopes for an undefeated season of Ivy League play come to an end on Saturday after a 37-35 shootout loss at Cornell. The Tigers appeared a lot more like the team that started the season off 0-2 rather than the team that had won its past four games, as they played well but fell just short of what they had to do to win. The loss dropped Princeton to 3-1 in the Ivy League and made achieving lone possession of the Ivy League title very unlikely. Star Big Red quarterback Jeff Mathews, who leads the league in passing yardage, had 525 yards through the air on the day while leading Cornell to the close victory.

The men's cross country team won the Ivy League Heptagonal championship at West Windsor Fields on Saturday afternoon, while the field hockey team clinched at least a share of its conference title with a 5-0 victory at Cornell. Later in the evening, the women's soccer team clinched at least a share of the league championship with a 5-1 rout of the Big Red.

Cross Country: Competitive Heps features nationally ranked Ivy League teams

Drenching sleet and snow, ankle-deep slush, subfreezing temperatures and gusting winds made the 2011 Heptagonal Cross Country Championships one of the most challenging races in Ivy League history. This year’s weather promises to be more forgiving, forecasting a dry Saturday with a temperature in the upper 60s. Nevertheless, the battle for the team title will be fiercer and more charged than the league has seen in recent years.

Women's Hockey: Junior-led women seek playoff return

After opening the season with two road wins, the women’s ice hockey team will kick off conference play this weekend. Ranked seventh in the preseason coaches’ poll, the Tigers will face their first ECAC competition this weekend when they host Dartmouth on Friday night and Harvard the following afternoon for their home openers. With goals of a more successful postseason than last year’s, Princeton will need to have strong performances in conference play to set up a deep playoff run.

For the men’s hockey team, its chance to regain dominance on the ice after an exasperating 2011-12 crusade that ended 9-16-7 hinges on the Tigers’ greater familiarity with one another and their health. The reformed Princeton will have its first regular-season test this weekend against Brown and either Dartmouth or Yale in the Ivy League Shootout. The Tigers will return home after fall break to face a pair of their biggest rivals, Cornell and Colgate, to kick off ECAC play.

Men's Water Polo: For Princeton, each unique pool adds another dimension

It’s difficult to imagine that an NCAA-sanctioned sport would allow conference games to be played in facilities whose specifications are not uniform but merely recommended — that a playing field could be so subjective that an NCAA national championship could be held in a facility whose significant dimensions can extensively vary, depending on an arbitrary year of the facility’s construction. But this kind of subjectivity is all too familiar to collegiate water polo players, at times entirely transforming their sport depending on the facility in which they play.

Golf: Tigers cap fall with 1st-place finishes

Both the men’s and women’s golf teams capped their fall seasons off with their first victories last weekend. The women finished first of eight teams at the Lehigh Invitational, winning by one stroke at Saucon Valley Country Club. Meanwhile, the men won the Ivy League Match Play Tournament, its first team victory since the spring of 2006.
