Sen. Kit Bond '60 won't seek re-election

U.S. Senator Christopher ?Kit? Bond ?60 will not run for re-election in 2010, the 69-year-old senator said Thursday in an address before the Missouri General Assembly.Bond, who was elected governor of Missouri when he was 33 years old, explained that his decision to retire from the Senate had to do with his age.?In 1972, I became Missouri?s youngest governor.

Escaped inmate apprehended

Marc Harris, an inmate who escaped from a Montgomery Township facility Tuesday morning was caught early Thursday in Vineland, roughly 80 miles south of Princeton.?The Department of Corrections? Fugitive Unit are the ones who apprehended him,? New Jersey Department of Corrections spokesman Matthew Schuman said.

Lynn GS '82 named deputy secretary of defense

President-elect Barack Obama announced Thursday afternoon that he has selected William Lynn GS ?82 for deputy secretary of defense, the second-highest-ranking official in the Department of Defense behind Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.Lynn, who received his bachelor?s degree from Dartmouth and law degree from Cornell before earning an MPA from the Wilson School, formerly served as Pentagon chief financial officer and comptroller in the Clinton administration and is currently senior vice president of government operations and strategy at major American defense contractor Raytheon Company.Obama also announced other Department of Defense picks, including Robert Hale for comptroller, Michele Flournoy for undersecretary of defense for policy and Jeh Charles Johnson for general counsel.?I am confident that these distinguished individuals have the expertise and commitment needed to help me implement a sustainable national security strategy that combats 21st century threats and keeps the American people safe,? Obama said in a statement.Lynn has earned numerous Department of Defense medals for distinguished public service, including the Joint Distinguished Civilian Service Award and the 2000 Distinguished Federal Leadership Award for his work in improving defense accounting practices.

With the launch of TigerTransit this Monday came the end of the P-Rides Express shuttle and the employment of the students who helped run it.The P-Rides Express shuttle service, which provided on-demand transportation to students, faculty and staff between the hours of 5 p.m.

Olympiad competition held on campus

Nearly 600 students from 40 regional high schools and middle schools filled Jadwin and McDonnell halls on Thursday afternoon to compete in a regional tournament of the New Jersey Science Olympiad.The tournament, which consisted of 16 events, tested students on their knowledge of various subjects, including chemistry, ecology and meteorology.

With budget shortfall, Borough must cut jobs, raise taxes

In response to a recently announced $1.3 million 2009 budget shortfall, Princeton Borough will likely cut jobs and raise taxes and fees in the upcoming year, Borough Administrator Robert Bruschi said.?We have to come up with $1.3 million and have to live within the state budget guidelines ? We?ve cut the expenses we can cut, so all that is left is to cut jobs,? he said, noting that the Borough is under a number of constraints.

Endowment could fall 25 percent

President Tilghman announced Thursday that the endowment has lost at least 11 percent of its value in the four months since the end of the fiscal year on June 30, 2008, in a letter sent to the campus community.This figure ? which does not include the non-marketable securities that comprise half of the endowment ? does not capture the full extent of the loss, she said, noting that the University will plan for a 25 percent decrease by the end of the current fiscal year in June.

Wilson School dean may join State Department

Wilson School Dean Anne-Marie Slaughter ?80 is slated to become the head of policy planning at the Department of State under Hillary Clinton, President-elect Barack Obama?s nominee for Secretary of State, according to several media outlets.The Associated Press and Reuters reported Thursday that anonymous sources have confirmed that Clinton intends to pick Slaughter for the post.

On, Dec. 15, President Tilghman met Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Rep.
