This fall show was the type of performance that makes you want to dance in your seat and forget where you are entirely. This dance company was not afraid to take unexpected risks and fully realize them. BodyHype was doing its own thing, but with such an eclectic show also managed to do practically everything in “Fahrenheit.”
Despite X’s brutality, for a generation of young people who have experienced debilitating levels of depression and anxiety as well as a staggering, increasing suicide rate, X was a disturbingly fitting generational spokesmen.
“A Star Is Born” is an emotional masterpiece. The film documents the tragic love story of Ally and Jack, two musicians played astoundingly by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. Jack — an aging, severely depressed, hearing-impaired, washed-up, alcoholic rock star who dabbles in coke and pills when the booze can’t get the job done — meets Ally, a slightly younger, existentially restless waitress.
We should keep in mind that alongside shows with inclusive casting that make us think critically about traditional white narratives, we also need more shows that engage directly with minority narratives. This thoughtful rendition of “Legally Blonde” pushes the Princeton community to continue opening up these spaces in theater with intentionality.
And as the show’s title “Transparent” suggests, the audience is quickly able to see through the dancing onstage to the passion and dedication of the dancers in eXpressions Dance Company that exists underneath all their movement.
“Props can be found in the body and the language of the actors,” she continued. If you step onto a boat, this all depends on gestures and physical movements of the actors, which is unlike an American show where a real boat or horse might come onto the stage, she illustrated.
“It is one of our goals to offer our students a diverse range of dance perspectives and traditions to wrestle with physically and artistically,” said Susan Marshall, director and lecturer of dance at Princeton, in reference to the Princeton Dance Festival.
