As Princeton’s winter break nears its close and students prepare for the spring semester, Princeton athletic seasons were in full swing last week. The Tigers played a total of 25 games between Jan. 14 and Jan. 20, winning the majority of these competitions. As March Madness and the Ivy League Tournament are quickly approaching, both men’s and women’s basketball have remained victorious, winning all games in the past week.

Four basketball games were played this week, all resulting in victory for the Tigers and contributing to a six game winning streak for the men’s team and nine game winning streak for the women’s team. Both teams currently claim the top position in Ivy League standings. For the remainder of the regular season, Princeton basketball games will continue to be solely within the Ivy League after the final non-conference games were played in the final days of December.

For the third week in a row, Princeton men's and women's basketball teams received points in the Associate Press (AP) weekly college basketball poll of the top 25 teams, indicating several of the sportswriters and broadcasters who contribute their own rankings to the poll place Princeton in the top 25 teams nation-wide. Despite this, Princeton basketball has only been ranked in the top 25 once this season, when women's basketball was ranked 25 after week four.

Both the men’s and women’s hockey teams lost to Cornell, with the men losing 2–6 and the women losing 3–5. Both the men’s and women’s teams also lost to Colgate, with the men losing 3–6 and the women losing 0–6. Despite these losses, Princeton men's hockey has won the most games so far within the Ivy League and women's hockey stands behind Yale and Cornell in Ivy League standings.

Nine of last week’s games were within the Ivy League, as the Tigers went up against Columbia, Cornell, and Dartmouth. Princeton won a higher percentage of these in-league games compared to wins overall. The only two losses against teams in the Ivy League were against Cornell, in men’s and women’s hockey.

New York is the only state where the Tigers lost more games than won, with the two losses from hockey games against Colgate and Cornell. Only two games, played in California, were not played on the East Coast. These two games were both played by men’s volleyball.

In the week ahead, students can attend wrestling and squash home games through Wintersession programming. Princeton Tigers will compete in Honolulu, Hawaii, where women’s water polo will compete against the University of Hawai’i, Fresno State, and Azusa Pacific. These games of the Rainbow Invitational mark the start of the Women’s Water Polo season for the Tigers.

Princeton will also compete against all Ivy League teams but Dartmouth, compared to the three in the week before.
