VP for Campus Life Cynthia Cherrey to leave U. in August

Vice President for Campus Life Cynthia Cherrey will be leaving the University in August to head the International Leadership Association as president and chief executive officer. She will begin her new post as permanent president on Sept. 1.

According to its website, the ILA is a global network for all those who practice, study and teach leadership. Cherrey has been a member of this organization since its launch in 1999, ILA Chief Operating Officer Shelly Wilsey said.

“She’s been part of the ILA since it was created and so her fingerprints are on many of the association’s achievements over the last 16 years,” Wilsey noted. “I personally am excited by this transition and am certain that with her increased attention, the ILA will reach new heights.”

Cherrey said she looks forward to being a part of the ILA's expansion and strategic development.

"Presently, there are over 2,700 members from 17 countries. One of the things that I am looking forward to is continuing our growth, particularly outside of North America and continuing to work with all of our leadership scholars from around the world," Cherrey said.

She noted that the ILA has grown so large as an organization that after a certain point, it just made sense to move into a full-time role with it.

During her time as vice president for campus life, Cherrey has helped bring in new leadership, such as Pulin Sanghvi, the executive director of Career Services; Kimberly de los Santos, director of the Pace Center for Civic Engagement; and Mollie Marcoux, athletics director.

“The things that have really impressed me are the rapport she has with many students, just the number of students on this campus whom she knows and the extraordinary people whom she’s brought to this campus,” University President Christopher Eisgruber ’83 said.

She leaves the University at a time when she is a named defendant in a lawsuit brought against the University and some of its administrators that is challenging its mental health policies.

The vice president for campus life oversees offices such as Campus Life Initiatives, Athletics and Campus Recreation, Career Services, Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, Office of Religious Life, Pace Center for Civic Engagement and University Health Services.

“I will treasure the relationships that I have established here at Princeton, and so I will miss having that day-to-day contact with [University community members]. I will miss the exceptional students and being a small part of their lives and working with exceptional faculty,” Cherrey said. She added, "I think one of the areas we really need to work on is to ensure that every student finds their place at Princeton.”

Eisgruber said that the administration recently learned of Cherrey's departure and is just beginning to make plans for finding her successor.

“In a vice president for campus life, you need somebody who is simultaneously a leader in the way that Cynthia Cherrey has been and a strong administrator and somebody who can make the kinds of connections to students that are very important to understanding what’s happening in our community,” he added.

Executive Vice President Treby Williams will head the search process, Eisgruber said.

“It's tough to fill the shoes of a successful person," Eisgruber explained. "You know you can’t look to replicate that person"
