Tigers survive overtime battle with Midshipmen

The No. 10Tigers dug deep to overcome the No. 19 Navy Midshipmen (10-9 overall, 1-3 CWPA) 11-10, with sophomore utility Jovan Jeremic clinching the game-winning goal with 50 seconds remaining in the second period of overtime. Princeton now extends their overall season record to 11-1 overall and 6-1 in the CWPA.

The Tigers came out with all cylinders firing with junior center Thomas Nelson scoring a goal within the first minute before a discrepancy in the shot clock resulted in the game being reset. Nelson's disallowed goal did not deter him, as he went on to score a match-high four goals. Other players of note were freshman attacker Jordan Collina who had a field day in the sprints, winning five of five, and sophomore attacker Curtis Fink who added four ejections, a steal and a goal to his team's tally.

Down 8-6 with six minutes remaining in the second half, the Tigers took control of the game with Nelson setting up Fink, who found the back of the net. Senior captain and attacker Drew Hoffenberg drew a penalty and scored the equalizer before freshman attacker Jordan Collina made his first collegiate penalty shot to put the Tigers up by one with three-and-a-half minutes remaining. The Midshipmen drew level with just over two minutes remaining, and the score would remain at nine apiece until the end regulation. With overtime underway, some razzle dazzle from Nelson put the Tigers up by one, before a midshipmen equalizer locked the game at 10-10. With 1:15 remaining in the second overtime period, junior utility Jamie Kuprenas did what he did best and drew his fourth ejection of the game to give the Tigers a six-to-four-man advantage from which Jeremic was able to capitalize on to score the game-winning goal.

“It was good to get the job done in the end today, but going into next week we need to focus on our man-on-man opportunities and take better advantage of our man-up advantages” said Hoffenberg.

The Tigers now look ahead to a three-game series in California next week that includes games against Pacific and an undefeated No. 1 UCLA squad.
