A Yale committee has recommended that the school offer online courses to students and community members in the future, continuing the trend of colleges and universities looking to online education to enhance their course offerings.
The Ad Hoc Yale College Committee recommended to Yale College Dean Mary Miller ’75 that students enroll in one online course during their years in college. Yale previously offered online summer courses in 2011 and 2012, on which the new online courses will be modeled.
According to the committee’s report, faculty members should be able to choose between teaching an online course and posting course materials to members of the public not taking the course for credit.
Starting in June, Princeton began offering online lectures through Coursera, a for-profit company founded by two Stanford professors in 2011. Coursera has also formed partnerships with Stanford, the University of Michigan and Penn.
