News & Notes: City of Providence ‘in peril,’ asks Brown to double payments

The City of Providence, R.I., is calling on Brown University to double its payments to the city, the majority of which are voluntary contributions, a debate that mirrors controversies with other private universities around the country and the cash-strapped towns in which they are located.

The mayor of Providence, Angel Taveras, said in his State of the City address Monday night that the city "is in peril," according to the Brown Daily Herald. The city is calling on Brown to roughly double its current contributions, which include voluntary payments and fees on land that is not tax-exempt.

The university current pays about $4 million each year, and the city is asking Brown to double that contribution over the next 10 years, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Princeton has long faced calls by local residents to increase its voluntary tax payments on its nonprofit land. The University is contributing $2.475 million to the Borough and the Township this year.
