Senior Hilary Bartlett, a three-time All-Ivy League player, was the tournament’s top-seeded singles player and received a bye into the Round of 64. She cruised through her first two matches, dropping Ivy League rivals Ioana Alecsiu and Ryann Young in straight sets, but Boston College rookie Jessica Wacnik would not fall as easily in the Round of 16. Wacnik took an early lead and pulled away in the third set to win, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Bartlett, who reached the doubles finals with Taylor Marable ’11 in this event last year, also partnered with freshman Lindsay Graff to form the second-seeded doubles team.
The duo dropped only two games in its first two matches on Friday. But Amber Li and Annie Sullivan of Yale, the two Tigers’ first seeded opponents, pulled off an upset in the Round of 16, dropping Bartlett and Graff 9-7.
Another senior-freshman duo, Rachel Saiontz and Katie Goepel, made it to Sunday’s quarterfinal round. Saiontz and Goepel also swept two matches on Friday, though winning by smaller margins, and also faced a Yale team in the Round of 16.
This Tiger group had better luck, though, beating Steph Kent and Blair Seideman 8-4. Seventh-seeded Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev got the better of Saiontz and Goepel in the quarterfinal round, 8-5.
Saiontz, the eighth-seeded singles player, was upset by Dartmouth’s Akiko Okuda in straight sets in her first match. Goepel and junior Monica Chow also lost their openers, while Graff easily defeated her first opponent before falling to seventh-seeded Vicky Brook of Yale, 6-3, 6-3.
The women’s team travels to North Carolina for the Kitty Harrison Invitational over fall break to close the fall season.
The more comprehensive spring campaign, including the seven-match Ivy League slate, is scheduled to begin at Jadwin Gymnasium on Feb. 1.
