African American studies professor Cornel West GS ’80 was arrested on Friday afternoon, the second arrest this week, several outlets reported on Friday evening.
West was among several dozen protesters who were arrested in New York on Friday after linking arms in an act of planned civil disobedience before a Harlem NYPD station.
Though endorsed by the central Occupy Wall Street movement at Zuccotti Park, Friday's Harlem protest was arranged by separate left-wing groups, according to Salon.
The act was designed to protest New York's “stop and frisk” policy, which allows police officers to randomly stop and frisk pedestrians.
It is unclear whether West was detained or is being held, though the Associated Press reported that, according to police, most of the arrested protestors were or will be presented with summonses and then released.
West was previously arrested on Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C., after protesting on the steps of the Supreme Court, but he was released on Monday afternoon after spending the night in jail.
Charges against West following Sunday's arrest were dropped, though prosecutors reserve the right to revisit the charges.
“Professor Cornel West’s participation in the protest was an individual choice, as members of Princeton’s faculty frequently participate in activities in line with their interests,” University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua said in an email following West's initial arrest.
“Princeton is a place that is committed to fostering an atmosphere of civic engagement and academic freedom,” he added.
West is currently on sabbatical, so no classes would be affected by his potential detention.
