The University has recently come under fire for graphic photographs allegedly leaked by a University researcher depicting the mistreatment of primates. The recent press release from SAEN also alleges that the University exempts 92 percent of its primates from Animal Welfare Act regulations and has permitted a primate to escape.
The other laboratories on the list include Harvard, Oregon Health Sciences University, University of Washington and University of Louisiana, which SAEN named as the worst primate lab in the United States. Offenses committed by these institutions include negligence, barren enclosures, painful experiments without anesthesia and electro-ejaculation.
Founded in 1996, SAEN is an activist group whose stated goal is to end animal abuse in laboratories, according to its website.
