The projects were awarded by the Carbon Mitigation Initiative and the Siebel Energy Challenge, two institutes that fund such climate and energy ventures.
SEC is a branch of the Grand Challenges Program in PEI which also awards funds for student internships. Started in 2000, CMI represents a partnership between the University and BP that seeks to research carbon mitigation.
The selection for funded proposals was done by independent faculty panels in the two groups, according to the press release.
“Every one of the seven new projects represents a shift of at least a portion of a faculty member’s research in favor of deeper involvement in the colossally challenging problems of energy and the environment,” professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering Robert Socolow said.
Socolow is also the co-director of CMI and director of SEC.
These projects involve faculty from the Engineering School, the Wilson School and several natural science departments.
