“Our tournament last week in Augusta was our first time out on the course this year for a tournament and one of our first few rounds on grass for the season,” senior Maggie Boberg said. “I think we definitely figured out what we needed to be working on to make our next tournament more of a success.”
“We were all really excited to start our spring season after not being able to play outside for almost five months,” freshman Kelly Shon added. “We wanted to have fun and appreciate the weather while trying to play our best.”
Overall, the Tigers shot a plus-57 for the course with a team score of 921. No. 8 Purdue took the tournament with the only players under par and a total score of 859, and host Augusta State came in second with a score of 880.
Regardless of the final scores, however, the Tigers said they were glad to see improvement within the tournament and that they are looking to continue making strides.
“Our team score improved each round, so we are definitely off to a good start and looking forward to work our way towards the rest of the season,” Shon said.
“It was a good course and it was playing pretty quick so it put a light on, at least for myself, the short game,” Scarpetta said. “That isn’t a surprise in golf since that’s usually where you use lose the most strokes anyway, but the fact that the course was playing particularly quick underlined it.”
The team was especially pleased to have a chance to play outdoors, something they had not been able to do at wintry Princeton.
“Most of the teams in the tournament field have been playing outside for a while, and we barely got to play outside a week before,” Shon said.
“We wanted to go out there and try to not get too frustrated with our play, given we had limited means of practicing given the weather,” Scarpetta said. “It’s about making sure you don’t get too disheartened and try to keep an inventory on what you need to work on.”
With one tournament and a preparatory stay in Georgia under their belts, the team looks forward to the rest of the spring season.
“We spent the rest of the week at Reynold’s Plantation in Georgia working on our game,” Boberg said about the team’s training. “All told, it was a greak week and we’re looking forward to Georgetown’s tournament in two weeks.”
