Due to a rash of injuries that kept the team from reaching its full potential, Princeton amassed a 12-32 overall record last season and went 6-14 in the Ivy League. The Tigers will open their home slate of games on March 27 — when the team takes on Marist College — and will begin conference play on April 1 with a doubleheader against the Brown Bears at Class of 1895 Field.
Q: What was your “welcome to college” moment?
MC: I’m not sure I really have one. It’s not that I don’t feel welcome here or anything; I’m just not sure I have one specific “welcome to college” moment. Actually, I guess it was when I went to meet the guys who lived in the room above me, and they were just so shocked when I told them that I was an athlete and an engineer. I think they still don’t believe me.
NC: When I popped my shoulder out and had to go to the hospital by myself. It sounds lame, but [it was early on] and going there on my own made me think that I was actually in college.
Q: What do you like most about catching?
MC: Receiving balls from the pitcher.
Q: What’s your best memory of freshman week?
MC: Definitely the Outdoor Action dance.
Q: Wait, really?
MC: Oh, I thought you had said the worst. Well, at the OA dance, I really wanted to dance with a guy I liked, but another boy came up to me and asked to dance. I didn’t want to say no, so we spent the next three minutes in that awkward, middle-school dance position, him staring really intensely at my lips and me looking in the opposite direction. That was awkward.
NC: [Noticing that Cousens is twitching and squirming in her seat as she speaks] You really like to move a lot, don’t you?
MC: Well, yeah. Except for when I’m not moving.

NC: [Stares]
Q: What’s your favorite thing to eat at the dining hall?
MC: Cereal!
Q: What do you like to eat for dessert?
MC: Frozen yogurt … with cereal!
Q: What’s the best part about being an athlete on campus?
MC: Getting to wear sweatpants to class and have an excuse.
NC: Probably the bond that you develop with your teammates. You get really close with everybody on your team.
Q: Who gets the most play off the field?
MC: I can’t answer that except to say that Nikki is known to have a diversified asset portfolio.
NC: No comment.
Q: What do you like the most about being from California? [Note: Cousens is from Northen California while Chu is from Southern California.]
MC: [Looking at Chu] The fact that I’m from Northern California, and not Southern.
NC: That’s just hella obnoxious.
MC: And the fact that I can say hella and get away with it.
NC: Hella hella hella hella hella.
MC: Plus, when I go home, I get to see the best views in the world and be in the best place in the world. That’s nice too.
