After opening with a loss to Clarion College on Friday evening, the wrestling team rallied to rout Franklin & Marshall on Saturday morning and split the weekend's dual meets. The Tigers (3-6 overall, 2-1 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association) were defeated 15-22 by Clarion (2-0) but had a decisive 34-6 win against Franklin & Marshall (0-6, 0-4).
Sophomore 125-pounder Garrett Frey, freshman 174-pounder Ryan Callahan, junior 157-pounder Daniel Kolodzik and senior captain and 184-pounder Travis Erdman all scored two victories, one from each of the meets over the weekend.
Frey scored his 20th and 21st wins of the season this weekend, defeating his Clarion opponent in a 7-2 decision on Friday and winning by forfeit on Saturday. Frey is on track to top his own season best of 27 wins last season, during which he earned a second place finish at EIWA Championships and a spot in the NCAA tournament.
Callahan wrestled well in a high-pressure situation, keeping Princeton alive in its meet against Clarion with a 6-2 win on Friday night. He finished the weekend with a 6-5 win against F&M, holding off a strong third period comeback by his opponent to extend the Princeton lead.
Kolodzik earned two technical falls in his matches this weekend, extending his momentum after a strong showing in December's Southern Scuffle tournament. Saturday's victory marked Kolodzik's 17th of the season.
Erdman opened his weekend with a 12-2 major decision against Clarion, tying the score at 15. He then celebrated his 22nd birthday in style on Saturday, earning Princeton’s only pin of the weekend during his bout at F&M.
After Frey opened the meet with a 7-2 victory on Friday, Clarion rallied for three consecutive wins. Kolodzik’s technical fall in the 157-pound category cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 10-8, but junior Andy Lowy, making his debut at 165, was pinned early in his match. After Callahan and Erdman evened the team score at 15, Clarion took control, as freshman 197-pounder Danny Santoro and 285-pounder Charles Fox — each wrestling up from their normal weight classes — dropped their matches.
Putting Friday's struggles behind them, the Tigers wrestled aggressively and explosively on Saturday when they arrived at F&M. After a forfeit at 125 pounds gave Princeton a 6-0 lead to open the match, freshman Adam Krop dropped his bout at the 133-pound weight class. Undeterred, the Tigers took the next six matchups before finally suffering a defeat at 197 pounds. Sophomore 141-pounder Luis Ramos and freshman 149-pounder Brandon Rolnick each scored major decisions, earning wins by 11-1 and 15-2 margins, respectively. Lowy earned his first victory of the season at 165 pounds with a reversal at the final whistle, winning the match 8-6. Fox finished the team’s weekend by earning his first win in the 285-pound weight class by riding his opponent for 1 minute, 26 seconds to clinch an extra point and score a 2-1 win.
The Tigers will take to the mats again at the end of Intersession when they will travel to the University of Virginia. The team will then open their conference competition in a home double-header against Harvard and Brown on February 5th.
