Men's Soccer: Ivy champs draw UMBC in opening round of NCAA tournament on Thursday

The Ivy League champion Tigers (13-3-1 overall, 7-0 Ivy League) had hoped that their victory over Yale on Saturday — which extended their best-ever winning streak to 12 games and solidified their first-ever 7-0 Ivy League season — would be enough to grant them a first-round bye in the tournament and a home game in the second round.

The top 16 teams in the 48-team tournament were given a bye in the first round. Princeton was ranked No. 11 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America coaches’ poll and No. 20 in the ratings percentage index, or RPI, which takes into account strength of schedule. A victory Thursday over UMBC (11-4-3), which won the America East Conference, would set up a second-round match at William & Mary on Sunday.

“It’s a little bit of a letdown, but that’s not really going to affect anything,” senior goalkeeper and co-captain Sean Lynch said. “We’ve immediately started preparing for UMBC.”
