Garrett '89 takes over as head coach of Cowboys

Jason Garrett ’89, one of Princeton’s greatest quarterbacks, has been named the interim head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Garrett, who was the team’s offensive coordinator and assistant head coach, was promoted following the firing of head coach Wade Phillips on Monday afternoon.

The move comes on the heels of the Cowboys’ seventh loss of the season. Owner Jerry Jones had stated as recently as Friday that Phillips would remain head coach for the rest of the season, but Sunday night’s 45-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers convinced Jones change his mind.

“I do believe Jason has the temperament, the disposition, to affect the culture to change,” Jones said in a press conference Monday. “I think this is important.”Garrett was the National Football League’s highest-paid assistant. This is his third season with the Cowboys. Through his first two years, the Cowboys averaged 25.5 points per game and 355 yards of offense per game. Garrett’s offenses sent seven players to the Pro Bowl.

Before coming to the Cowboys, Garrett was a coach for the Miami Dolphins.

As a senior at Princeton in 1988, Garrett was captain of the football team and was named Ivy League Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-American. His 66.5 percent completion percentage and his 1.8 percent interception rate are by far the best in program history.

His 227.8 yards of offense per game is second in program history. His 4,274 passing yards and 366 completions are third best in program history. His 7.77 yards per attempt is fourth all time. After college, Garrett enjoyed a brief stint in the NFL.

Garrett’s family is heavily involved in coaching. His father coached and scouted in the NFL for more than 30 years. His brothers John and Judd also played at Princeton, graduating in 1988 and 1990, respectively. John is currently the tight ends coach for the Cowboys, while Judd is the team’s assistant director of pro scouting.
