Fencing: Mills takes silver in foil; Kelley receives bronze in epee for men at Garret Open

The tournament featured nine of the top 20 teams from last year’s NCAA tournament.

Junior Alexander Mills brought home a silver medal in the foil division for the men’s team, and sophomore Edward Kelley took the bronze in the epee division.

The men’s team’s best finish was in the saber division, though, as freshman Philip Dershwitz and senior John Stogin earned top-10 finishes and no team member finished worse than 29th place out of 44 entrants.

Four teammates earned top-30 finishes out of 72 fencers in the epee matches, and four Tigers earned top-25 honors in a field of 53 foil competitors.

The women’s team also performed solidly over the weekend. Freshman Eve Levin led the squad in her collegiate debut with an impressive second-place finish in the foil division. Junior Lucile Jarry was just two spots behind her in the division, giving Princeton two top-five finishers out of 61 entrants.

The Tigers occupied three of the top 15 spots in the saber division, where sophomore Eliza Stone fell just short of a medal with a fifth-place finish. Sophomore Phoebe Caldwell led Princeton in the epee division, taking eighth place.

Penn State performed dominantly in the men’s competitions, with its fencers earning first place in all three divisions.

Ohio State dominated the women’s competitions, taking home first-, second- and third-place finishes in the epee, saber and foil divisions, respectively.
