Women's Hockey: After slow start, Colgate and Cornell come to compete at Baker Rink

“Playing at home is special. It’s your rink, your home,” junior forward Paula Romanchuk said. “Usually we get a good group of parents and fans too, which I think pumps up the team.”

No stranger to home games, Colgate (2-4) will make its first road trip when it comes to Princeton today. The Raiders have had a rollercoaster season to date. Despite their unimpressive record, the Raiders claimed a victory over No. 8 New Hampshire on Oct. 9 in an impressive 1-0 overtime win. They followed that with a victory over Connecticut and a near-upset of another top-10 opponent, No. 10 Providence, to whom they lost 2-1 in overtime. Colgate fell twice to Wayne State last weekend, 4-0 and 5-3.

Colgate features a balanced offense, with 12 different players having scored points this season. The Raiders are led by sophomores Brittany Phillips and Jenna Klynstra, who have two goals apiece, and sophomore Jordan Brickner, who has four assists.

Princeton’s offense, on the other hand, has had a slow start to the season. Romanchuk’s power-play goal against Northeastern in the team’s 2-1 loss last weekend remains the Tigers’ only goal on the season. The Tigers were shut out 4-0 at Providence, marking the first time in the last 18 years that the women’s ice hockey team has lost its first two games. On the defensive side, sophomore goalkeeper Cassie Sequin has blocked 71 of 76 shots this season for a .934 save percentage. Princeton has a 16-4-2 all-time record against Colgate.

Cornell, last year’s national runner-up, is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation and has begun the season 2-0. All 15 players who have appeared in both games have registered points, with eight different players scoring goals. Freshman Jessica Campbell leads the team with four goals this season.

“Cornell is a very good team,” Romanchuk said. “In order to be successful against them, we will need to play our best individually and as a team. It’s crucial that we get off to a good start, play solid defensively and bury our chances when we get them.”

Princeton has a 40-23-3 all-time record against Cornell, although the Big Red took both contests between the two teams last year.

After this weekend’s games, the team will travel to play Quinnipiac on Tuesday, completing a crucial five-day stretch that could have major implications on the conference outlook.

“With such a competitive conference, any team can beat any other,” Romanchuk said. “You always have to show up ready to play.”
