Penn tops Dartmouth, Harvard rolls

Along with Princeton and Columbia, two other teams opened their Ivy League slate last weekend, while the rest split four non-league games. Here’s how they fared:

Penn 35, Dartmouth 28 (OT): After leading defending Football Championship Subdivision champion Villanova at halftime ten days ago, the Quakers (2-1 overall, 1-0 Ivy League) again looked like the team to beat. But Penn looked quite vulnerable in its conference opener, needing overtime to down the Big Green (2-1, 0-1) at home. Quarterback Billy Ragone snuck into the end zone for the eventual game-winning score, his third touchdown of the night, to give the Quakers their ninth consecutive league victory. Dartmouth quarterback Conner Kempe completed just 17 of 32 passes but threw for 239 yards, helping the Big Green overcome a 152-yard rushing deficit. The visitors were successful on four of five fourth-down conversion attempts and overcame a 14-point deficit in the third quarter.

Harvard 35, Lafayette 10: The Leopards’ run against Ivy League opponents continues to be fruitless, as the Crimson (2-1, 0-1) became the third consecutive Ancient Eight team to defeat Lafayette. Harvard opened the game with 21 unanswered points and cruised to a big victory. Running back Gino Gordon ran for 170 yards on just 12 carries, including a 74-yard score in the third quarter, boosting the Crimson to 311 rushing yards. The Leopards, who lost to Princeton in double overtime last week, conclude their run through the Ivy League at Columbia on Saturday.

Cornell 21, Bucknell 12: The Big Red (1-2, 0-1) picked up its first victory of the season, the first career victory for head coach Kent Austin. Cornell turned the ball over four times — one interception and three fumbles, all of which it lost — and was outgained by 69 yards, but it got much better field position and found the end zone three times. The Bison had to settle for four field-goal attempts, missing two, before they finally scored a touchdown late in the third quarter.

Albany 23, Yale 20: The Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0) faced a 17-6 deficit after an Albany touchdown with one minute left in the first half, but wide receiver Jordan Forney found the end zone from 28 yards as the clock expired — his second score from outside the red zone — to bring Yale within one possession. Quarterback Patrick Witt threw for 231 yards but completed less than half of his passes, while the Bulldogs were held to 81 rushing yards.

Rhode Island 27, Brown 24 (OT): Overtime is becoming a common sight for the Bears (2-1, 1-0), who defeated Stony Brook in two extra periods to open the season. They weren’t as lucky this time, as Rhode Island answered a Brown field goal with a 25-yard touchdown run to win the game. Quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero threw for 325 yards and three scores, but he threw two picks, and the Bears had a punt blocked in the end zone.
