“It’s always great to play Canadians to get our feet wet before the ECACs,” head coach Guy Gadowsky said, referring to the other teams in Princeton’s league.
Princeton started the game on its heels, allowing Quebec four shots and a goal in the first four minutes of the period. Quebec forward Etienne Martin-Bellavance had the puck at the center of the ice and fired a shot to the top-left corner of the cage.
The Tigers regained their stride quickly and began to play a more offensive game through the rest of the period, including two two-minute power plays in the first period.
However, the Patriotes broke through again with a goal in the 15th minute. Undeterred, the Tigers fired right back. Senior forward Mike Kramer found the back of the net about a minute later, assisted by freshman forward Andrew Calof and senior forward Matt Arhontas.
The Tigers started the second period on defense as well, and the Patriotes scored another goal in the third minute to make the score 3-1. But then, Princeton answered back with the next two goals to tie up the game 3-3 and tacked on one more goal to take the lead.
The first of the three goals came at the fifth minute from sophomore forward Will MacDonald off an assist by freshman defender Alec Rush. It was a short-handed goal with three Tiger attacking players surrounding Patriote goalie Vincent Lamontagne, who eventually fell into the cage and allowed the puck to go in. The next goal came six minutes later with a shot by freshman forward Jack Berger off an assist from Calof, his second of the game. The final goal of the period to take the lead happened during a Princeton power play in the 35th minute of the game, from a shot by Calof, that was assisted by Kramer and sophomore defenseman Michael Sdao.
The puck stayed mostly in Princeton’s possession for the remainder of the second and into the final period. The Patriotes were able to tie the game during a power play to make the score 4-4. But then the Tigers pulled through with a goal with 35 seconds left in the game from senior forward Kevin Lohry with an assist from MacDonald for the 5-4 win.
“The game was a good opportunity to see a lot of freshmen and the work the upperclassmen did over the summer,” Gadowsky said.
The Tigers will host Morrissville State in its second exhibition game this Saturday at 4 p.m. at Baker Rink.
