Golf: Men finish 8th, women place 4th

In the final tournament of its fall season, the men’s golf team finished eighth at the Northeast Invitational at Shelter Harbor, R.I. The par-71 course hosted all eight Ivy League teams and other stiff competition from schools such as Army, Navy and Boston College.

Columbia once again claimed the tournament crown, followed closely by Harvard and Penn, respectively.

Dartmouth also topped the Tigers, finishing tied for fifth.

“While we did not place as high as we would have liked in our final tournament of the fall, looking back on our fall season, the team is very pleased with our performance and the direction we are headed for the spring,” sophomore Bernie D’Amato said. “All eight Ivy teams competed in the classic at Shelter Harbor and the final results showed that we are right there with the best teams and can definitely compete for the championship in the spring.”

D’Amato finished tied for 11th place overall, with a final score of 6 over par. He led the Tigers, followed by senior Eric Salazar, who finished tied for 16th at 7 over par.

Juniors Chase Lovett-Woodsum and Evan Harmeling shot 12 over and 13 over par, respectively, and junior Patrick Wasserman rounded out the squad, with a final result of 19 over par.

“It was very windy the first day, which made the conditions pretty difficult,” Lovett-Woodsum said. “But it was nice to come back the second day and post one of the lower team rounds of the tournament. Bernie’s two top-five finishes this fall, along with his strong finish this weekend, gives the rest of the team a lot of confidence moving forward. Overall we had a strong fall season which we plan to build upon in the springtime.”

Meanwhile, the women’s team placed fourth in its final tournament of the fall season. The Tigers played in the Harvard Tournament at The International, a par-72 course in Bolton, Mass.

Princeton’s competition at the tournament included squads from all Ivy League schools except Cornell, which does not have a women’s golf team.

This was the second time this year that the Tigers competed against their league rivals. The previous time, at the Princeton Invitational, the Tigers finished behind Yale and ahead of Penn, Harvard and Columbia.

This time around, Yale took the tournament, followed by Harvard and Penn, respectively. Yale freshman Seo Hee Moon made a hole-in-one to help her set a career-low tournament score and an unofficial women’s course record, shooting 4 under par. The Bulldogs finished two strokes ahead of second-place Harvard and 16 ahead of Penn.

The Tigers were led by freshman Kelly Shon, who finished fifth overall at 6 over par. Sophomore Anna Jang finished eighth overall, at 9 over par. Three other Tigers finished in the top 28 individually: junior Wonji Choi (21st, at 17 over par), senior Kate Scarpetta (tied for 23rd, at 21 over par) and senior Rachel Blum (28th, at 24 over par).
