Women's Soccer: Pair of 1-0 losses puts damper on previously hot beginning to 2010 campaign for Tigers

Against Long Island University (5-1-1) in Roberts Stadium on Friday night, sophomore Kristin Watson conceded a 9th-minute goal that proved to be the difference in a tough-fought battle. A throw-in from forward Ariana Calderon found forward Toni Smith, who hit a long shot past Watson. The Blackbirds refused to let up defensively for the rest of the game, shutting down a Tiger offense that included sophomore forward Jen Hoy, who put three shots on net.

Hoy’s fireworks were not enough, though, as the starters only managed one shot on the game compared to the Blackbirds, whose starters had five. The Tigers could not convert their chances, as their seven corner kicks fell unconverted.

In Hempstead, N.Y., on Sunday, the Tigers once again fell, this time to Hofstra (6-1). Watson stopped a career-high six shots, but her effort was not enough.

A 49th-minute rebound goal by Pride forward Laura Greene put the hosts up for good.

The Tigers did have two scoring chances in the game, bookending play.

In the first minute, Hoy and junior forward Sara Chehrehsa combined to threaten the Pride, but Chehrehsa’s shot was blocked.

Hoy’s breakaway in the last minute was a little too hard-charging, as it was guided out for a goal kick.

Princeton’s offense once again sputtered throughout the game, as the starters only managed three shots, two of which were on goal. The whole squad had just six shots overall, and Chehrehsa led the way with two, one of which was on goal.

Hofstra’s offense went to work on the Orange and Black defense, which allowed 13 overall shots, four from Greene and four from midfielder Tiffany Yovino.

The Tigers face a quick turnaround and must face St. Joseph’s at home Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Hawks (3-5) have lost three of their last four games after getting off to an even-keeled start.
