The football team announced the bad news it was expecting on Monday, confirming that senior co-captain and inside linebacker Steve Cody would be out for the season with a broken leg.
Cody racked up 12 tackles against Lehigh on Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa., before going down and leaving the game in the fourth quarter. Last year, star All-Ivy running back and co-captain Jordan Culbreath was also lost for the season at Lehigh’s Goodman Stadium.
Cody went into the game as a pre-season All-American after coming in fifth in the nation and first in the Ivy League in tackles per game last season.
The loss of the defensive stalwart means that the team’s previously imposing defensive front now holds a large question mark. Cody’s leadership was unparalleled on the defensive unit, and without his presence, comparatively inexperienced senior linebacker Jon Olofsson will be left to pick up the slack.
The Tigers (0-1) recovered from Culbreath’s loss last year before going 4-6 overall for the third straight season. Culbreath was able to return with a medical redshirt exemption from the Ivy League after his diagnosis of aplastic anemia, and he is once again starting for the Tigers.
