Nearly all the football teams in the Ivy League competed in thrilling and intense matchups on a Saturday that saw the first major upset in league play and the near-defeat of a national champion.
Brown 29, Harvard 14: In one of the weekend’s two Ivy League games, Brown took on a heavily favored Harvard squad in the first night game ever played at Brown Stadium. The Bears showed off their stifling defense and held the Crimson to only 112 total yards in front of a crowd of 17,360. Harvard, which beat a well-regarded Holy Cross team in its season opener, got minus 16 total yards rushing in what can only be described as a serious upset.
No. 1 Villanova 22, Penn 10: Last season’s Ivy League champion faced down defending national champion Villanova at Villanova Stadium and nearly defeated the No. 1-ranked team. The Quakers led the Wildcats 10-9 until the final five minutes of the game, at which point Villanova went on a four-and-a-half minute scoring drive and then returned an intercepted pass for a touchdown to rack up 13 points and secure the victory.
Yale 21, Cornell 7: In Saturday’s other Ancient Eight matchup, Yale defeated Cornell at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y. The Bulldogs racked up 211 rushing yards to Cornell’s 22, thanks mostly to the play of Yale running back Alex Thomas. Thomas, who set a slew of state records during his high school career in Connecticut, netted 124 yards in 18 carries and scored his third touchdown of the season.
Columbia 24, Towson 10: Columbia rose to 1-1 overall with its victory over Towson. Lions quarterback Sean Brackett carried the team with 89 rushing yards and a touchdown but threw an interception in the process. Running backs Leon Ivery and Nick Gerst also contributed to the Columbia offense, each with a rushing touchdown.
Dartmouth 21, Sacred Heart 19: After three close quarters in which both teams traded the lead several times, Sacred Heart kicker Jesper Fredriksson missed a 38-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining to give Dartmouth the win.
